Standard progressive lenses offer bifocal lenses without the visible line of traditional bifocals. The lens offers a distance area in the top of the lens for far away viewing, an intermediate area in the middle of the lens for viewing at arms length, and a reading area at the bottom of the lens for close up viewing. Although considered a "bifocal" and not a "trifocal" with it's three areas, the intermediate area is due to the lenses "progression" from distance to near. Polycarbonate has become the standard in lens materials. Polycarbonate lenses are thinner and lighter than plastic lenses but are highly impact resistant making this material excellent for children, sports wear, and safety eye needs. The only drawback to the material is it does create a high level of chromatic abberation.
